An hour north of Kalaloch, we roll through Forks, Washington, a town perfectly situated between Pacific shores, Olympic mountains, and Northwest rain forests. It’s also the town where the "Twilight" series is based.
While I haven’t read the books or seen the films, I am aware of their pop cultural significance. And now, since I’ve been to Forks, I’m really curious about how the town and surrounding areas live in the story. So the next shitty cold or knockdown flu, I have a date with a vampire.
It’s only 20 minutes from Twilight to heaven.
I’m still getting the hang of this camping thing and I haven’t been to many places yet, but as soon as we enter the Mora campground, I didn’t want to leave.
A coastal forest of moss, ferns, and tall trees. A shady wonderland of greens, and browns and reds, the sun peaking through the high canopy. The air is cool and fresh with subtle whiffs of the ocean. Birds and humans have quiet conversations.
Heaven.
I try not to get my hopes up as we loop around looking for spots, passing all the happy campers. Some with RVs, many with tents, and all stoked by the surrounding beauty.
My people, my people.
Each site is better than the last, though many are already filled or too small for us. But after a few loops, we find two sites just big enough for each of our trailers. I couldn’t believe it.
Dave expertly backs our trailer into the spot, unhitches it and parks the truck beside it. It’s a bit of a tight squeeze, but we don’t care. We got a spot!
“Thank you for getting us here safe.“
“You’re welcome honey,” he says, “I’m so proud of you.”
“Me? I didn’t do anything.”
“You didn’t complain. You went with the flow.”
Huh?
“I don’t complain!” Dave just looks at me. “I go with the flow!”
“Yeah, if the flow is going in your direction,” he says.
Huh? What? That’s not… true. Is it?
I pause to think about it. Oh shit. It’s totally true. I couldn’t even argue with him.
Damn, I always thought I was so chill…
Jared assures us we’ll find better sites the following day. By his estimation, some people will leave on Monday. All we gotta do is scout our ideal spots, check the board on who’s taking off, and then get up early to stake our claim. He volunteers do to reconnaissance in the morning.
That’s how this ‘first-come, first-serve’ thing works: you get in where you fit in and go from there. Story of my life. - Joy
